Is Your Home Prepared for Extreme Weather?

Is Your Home Prepared for Extreme Weather? What GTA Homeowners Need to Know

The weather in the Greater Toronto Area isn’t what it used to be. From intense heatwaves to flash floods, windstorms, and ice build-up, extreme weather events are no longer rare — they’re becoming part of our seasonal norm. As a homeowner, the big question is: Is your home ready?

Here are key ways to prepare and protect your most valuable investment — your home.

1. Start With the Roof

High winds, heavy rain, and ice storms can wreak havoc on an aging or damaged roof.

  • Inspect annually for missing shingles, loose flashing, and signs of leaks.
  • Clean gutters regularly to prevent water backup.
  • Consider upgrading to impact-resistant materials if your roof is due for replacement.

A strong roof is your first line of defense!

2. Keep Water Out

Flooding — both from rain and melting snow — is one of the most common issues in Southern Ontario.

  • Check grading around your home; water should flow away from your foundation.
  • Install or maintain a sump pump, especially if you have a basement.
  • Seal cracks in foundation walls and basement windows.
  • Consider backflow valves to prevent sewer backups during storms.

3. Prepare for Power Outages

Ice storms and wind events can knock out power for hours — even days.

  • Have an emergency kit: flashlight, batteries, water, food, and first aid.
  • Backup power: A portable generator can help keep the essentials running.
  • Surge protectors: Use them to protect electronics from unexpected power surges.

4. Secure the Exterior

Wind can turn garden furniture into dangerous projectiles, and snow buildup can strain structures.

  • Tie down or store patio furniture and garden decor when not in use.
  • Trim trees near your house to reduce the risk of falling branches.
  • Reinforce fences and outbuildings if they’re old or loose.

5. Protect Against Heatwaves

Hot, humid summers are here to stay.

  • Add insulation to keep cool air in and reduce energy bills.
  • Check your HVAC: Have it serviced annually to ensure it’s ready to handle high temps.
  • Install window coverings to block sun and keep interiors cooler.

Bonus: Check Your Insurance

Do you have coverage for sewer backups? Flooding? Wind damage? Now’s the time to review your policy and ask your provider about additional protection if needed.
