Brooklin

Brooklin is one of those Durham communities that has managed to keep its small-town character while growing into a popular family community. Located just north of Whitby, it offers newer homes, quiet streets, parks, trails and a historic downtown, while still being close enough to Toronto for commuters.

The original downtown Brooklin has a completely different feel from some of the newer subdivisions around it. You'll find older brick buildings, local shops, restaurants and cafés along Colborne Street and Baldwin Street, while the surrounding residential areas have newer detached homes, townhomes and family-friendly streets.

The homes are a big part of Brooklin's appeal. Many of the newer communities have larger detached homes, semi-detached houses and townhomes, with modern layouts and good-sized yards. There are also older homes closer to the original village, giving buyers a bit more variety.

For families, there are several schools in the community, including Brooklin High School, Chris Hadfield Public School, Brooklin Village Public School and St. Leo Catholic School. One of the nicest things about Brooklin is the amount of green space woven into the community. Brooklin Memorial Park is right in the heart of the village, while Grass Park, Town Hall Park and Heber Down Conservation Area provide additional places to walk, play and get outside. If you're into hiking or cycling, there are also plenty of trails and country roads surrounding Brooklin. Being just north of Whitby means you're not far from some of Durham's larger conservation areas either.

Downtown Brooklin has become a popular spot for grabbing coffee, going out for dinner or browsing local businesses. There are also plenty of everyday amenities nearby, including grocery stores, fitness facilities and services.

Families also appreciate the number of sports and recreation programs available. Hockey, soccer, baseball and other activities are a big part of the community, and the Abby Community Centre and local sports facilities help keep residents active.

For commuters, Brooklin is close to Highway 407 and Highway 412, providing convenient connections throughout Durham and the GTA. Whitby GO Station is also accessible by car, giving residents another option for getting into Toronto.

Brooklin has definitely grown, but that hasn't completely changed the character of the community. The original village still has that small-town feeling, while the newer neighbourhoods have brought in lots of young families and first-time buyers.

That's probably what people like most about Brooklin. You get a newer home and modern amenities, but you're still living somewhere that feels like a community rather than just another subdivision.
