Church–Wellesley Village

Church-Wellesley Village is one of those downtown neighbourhoods where you really feel like you’re in the middle of everything. It’s lively, colourful and full of personality, but at the same time, it has a strong community feel that can sometimes be hard to find right in the heart of the city.

The neighbourhood is best known as the centre of Toronto’s LGBTQ+ community, and that history and culture are a big part of what makes the Village so special. Church Street is the heart of the neighbourhood, lined with restaurants, cafés, patios, bars, shops and locally owned businesses. In the warmer months especially, the area comes alive with busy patios, people walking their dogs and neighbours spending time outside. It’s also at the centre of Toronto’s annual Pride celebrations, when the entire area becomes one of the busiest and most exciting parts of the city.

One of the things that makes Church-Wellesley interesting is the mix of old and new. Walk down some of the quieter side streets and you’ll find beautiful Victorian and Edwardian homes, row houses and tree-lined residential pockets that feel surprisingly removed from the downtown bustle. Mixed in are townhomes, apartment buildings and newer condo towers, giving buyers and renters plenty of different housing options.

There’s also a surprising amount of green space for such a central neighbourhood. Barbara Hall Park, right behind The 519 Community Centre, is a popular neighbourhood gathering spot and hosts community events throughout the year. Nearby Cawthra Square Park offers another little escape from the city, while Allan Gardens is one of the area's most recognizable landmarks. Its historic conservatory is filled with tropical plants and seasonal displays and is a great place to visit year-round.

Living here also means having a huge part of downtown Toronto within walking distance. Yonge Street is just a few blocks away, and you can easily walk to Yorkville, the Eaton Centre, Toronto Metropolitan University, the University of Toronto, Queen’s Park and the hospitals along University Avenue. There are grocery stores, pharmacies, gyms, coffee shops and restaurants throughout the area, so you really don't need to travel far for everyday errands.

For families, there are schools and community facilities in and around the neighbourhood, including Church Street Junior Public School, Jesse Ketchum Junior and Senior Public School and Jarvis Collegiate Institute. The 519 is also an important part of the community, offering programs, events and services for people of all ages.

Transit is another major advantage. Wellesley and College subway stations are both close by, with Bloor-Yonge and Dundas stations within walking distance depending on where you live. There are also streetcar and bus routes nearby, and for people who prefer to walk or bike, this is one of the easiest parts of Toronto to get around without a car.
