East York

East York is one of those Toronto communities that really does feel like a neighbourhood. It’s quiet, friendly and full of mature trees, parks and family homes, but you’re still close enough to downtown that getting into the city is pretty easy. There’s a reason so many people who grow up here end up staying, and why others move here and quickly feel at home.

One of the things I love about East York is the mix of homes and streets. You’ll find classic brick bungalows, detached and semi-detached houses, wartime homes, townhomes and newer builds. Some streets are full of homes that have been lovingly maintained for decades, while others have seen renovations and new construction. There’s a really nice mix of longtime residents and younger families throughout the community.

For families, there are lots of schools to choose from, including Cosburn Middle School, East York Collegiate Institute, Earl Grey Senior Public School, Secord Elementary School and Leaside High School nearby. There are also several Catholic schools in and around the area. With so many parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities, it’s easy to see why East York has always been popular with families.

One of the biggest perks of living here is the amount of green space. Taylor Creek Park is one of the area's biggest attractions, with miles of walking and cycling trails through the Don Valley. Stan Wadlow Park is another local favourite, with sports fields, playgrounds and plenty of open space. It’s the kind of area where you can head out for a walk and quickly forget you’re in the middle of Toronto.

East York also has plenty of places to stay active and get involved in the community. East York Community Recreation Centre offers programs and activities for all ages, while East York Civic Centre hosts community events and services. The neighbourhood has a strong community spirit, and there always seems to be something happening locally.

For shopping, restaurants and everyday errands, Pape Avenue, Coxwell Avenue and Danforth Avenue are all close by. The Danforth is especially convenient, with everything from Greek restaurants and cafés to grocery stores, bakeries and independent shops. East York Town Centre is another handy option for shopping and services.

Getting around is another big advantage. Depending on where you are in East York, you have easy access to Coxwell, Woodbine, Main Street, Pape and Donlands TTC stations, along with numerous bus routes. The Don Valley Parkway is also close by, making it convenient for commuters heading downtown or across the GTA.

There are also some great local spots that make East York feel like more than just a residential neighbourhood. Evergreen Brick Works is a short trip away and offers trails, gardens, markets and community events. Taylor Creek Park connects into the larger ravine system, while Woodbine Beach and the Beaches are also within easy reach for summer days by the lake.

East York has a pretty interesting history too. It was once its own municipality before becoming part of the City of Toronto in 1998. You can still see some of that history in the older homes, established streets and strong community identity. It has managed to grow and change while keeping that small-community feeling.

But what really makes East York special is the people. It’s the kind of place where you see the same neighbours out walking their dogs, kids playing at the park and families grabbing a coffee or running into friends at the local shops. There’s a real sense that people care about their community.

You’re close to parks, schools, transit, shopping and the Danforth, with downtown only a short trip away, but you still get that comfortable residential feeling. East York is a great choice for families, first-time buyers and anyone looking for a neighbourhood that feels established, connected and genuinely like home.
