Cabbagetown is one of those Toronto neighbourhoods that has a personality you really can’t mistake for anywhere else. Walk down one of the residential streets and you’ll see beautiful Victorian homes, colourful row houses, front porches and gardens that look like they’ve been part of the neighbourhood forever. Then, just around the corner, you have busy cafés, restaurants, parks, local shops and people going about their day. It feels historic, but it definitely doesn’t feel stuck in the past.

There’s a real neighbourhood feel here. People walk their dogs, kids head to the park, neighbours stop to chat and local cafés and businesses quickly become part of your regular routine. Considering how close you are to downtown Toronto, Cabbagetown can feel surprisingly residential once you step away from the busier main streets.

One of the things that really sets Cabbagetown apart is its access to green space. Riverdale Park West is right beside the neighbourhood and offers plenty of room to walk, play or simply get outside. It also connects you to some of Toronto’s larger trail and ravine systems, which is a huge bonus for runners, cyclists and dog owners. Then there’s Riverdale Farm, which has to be one of the most unique neighbourhood attractions anywhere in downtown Toronto. Set on more than seven acres, the working farm is home to animals, gardens, wooded areas and walking paths. It’s especially popular with families, but it’s also just a really nice place to wander through on a weekend morning. The fact that you can visit a farm and then walk back to Parliament Street for lunch in a matter of minutes pretty much sums up Cabbagetown.

Wellesley Park is another neighbourhood green space, and nearby Allan Gardens gives residents even more outdoor space along with its historic conservatory and indoor gardens. Parliament Street is the neighbourhood’s main hub for everyday life. It’s lined with independent restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, bakeries, grocery stores and local businesses. Carlton Street and Wellesley Street East offer even more options, and you’re close enough to downtown that an entirely different selection of restaurants, shopping and entertainment is never far away.

Cabbagetown also has a strong sense of community. Local events and neighbourhood traditions bring people together throughout the year, including the annual Cabbagetown Festival, when the streets fill with food, music, vendors and entertainment. It’s one of those events that really shows off the neighbourhood’s personality.

For anyone who works downtown, the location is hard to beat. Depending on where you live in the neighbourhood, walking or biking into the core is completely realistic. There are also TTC bus and streetcar routes along the surrounding streets, with Wellesley, College and Dundas subway stations accessible from the neighbourhood.

You’re also close to some of Toronto’s other well-known areas, including Church-Wellesley Village, St. Lawrence Market, the Distillery District and Riverdale, giving you even more options for dining, shopping and entertainment.

But what really makes Cabbagetown special is that it feels like a genuine neighbourhood rather than simply another part of downtown. There’s history everywhere you look, but there’s also a busy, everyday community living among it. You can walk past a row of 150-year-old homes, take the kids to Riverdale Farm, grab coffee from a local café and be downtown in minutes.

For buyers who love older Toronto homes, walkable streets and neighbourhoods with a strong identity, Cabbagetown is pretty hard to duplicate.
