Whitby

Whitby is one of those Durham communities that really does have a little bit of everything. You have established neighbourhoods, newer family communities, a charming downtown, Lake Ontario, great parks and trails, lots of shopping and restaurants, and an easy commute to Toronto. It’s easy to see why so many families choose to call Whitby home.

One thing I love about Whitby is the mix of old and new. You can spend the morning walking around Downtown Whitby, with its historic buildings, local shops, cafés and restaurants, and then head over to the waterfront for a walk by the lake. It gives you that small-town feel in some areas while still having all the conveniences of a growing community.

The Whitby Waterfront is definitely one of the biggest perks of living here. Whitby Harbour, Rotary Sunrise Lake Park and Kiwanis Heydenshore Park are all great places to get outside, and the Whitby Waterfront Trail is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. Kiwanis Heydenshore Park is especially popular with families, with a beach, playground, splash pad and plenty of space for a picnic.

If you enjoy nature, Lynde Shores Conservation Area is another local favourite. The trails take you through wetlands and natural areas, and it’s a great spot for walking, bird watching or just getting away from the busy streets for a little while. Heber Down Conservation Area is also nearby and offers more trails, fishing and outdoor space.

For families, Whitby has plenty of schools throughout the community, including Henry Street High School, Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute, Sinclair Secondary School and Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School. There are also lots of public and Catholic elementary schools, along with Durham College’s Whitby campus.

One of the things I really like about Whitby is how many options there are for recreation. Iroquois Park Sports Centre is a big part of the community and offers everything from skating and swimming to sports programs and fitness activities. There are also tons of local sports fields, arenas, playgrounds and community programs.

When it comes to homes, there’s a lot of variety. You’ll find older detached homes and bungalows on mature streets, classic Whitby semis and townhomes, condos and plenty of newer detached homes in growing communities. Brooklin, which is part of Whitby, offers another option with its own historic downtown, newer neighbourhoods and a slightly more small-town feel.

There’s no shortage of places to shop either. Taunton Gardens is a popular shopping area with plenty of stores, restaurants and services, while Downtown Whitby is where you’ll find more independent businesses and local favourites. There are also lots of shopping plazas throughout the community, making everyday errands pretty easy.

And when it comes to food, Whitby has a great local scene. Brock Street Espresso is a popular downtown spot for coffee, while Butchie’s is a local favourite for a casual meal. If you’re spending time in Brooklin, there are also plenty of cafés and restaurants to check out around Baldwin Street.

Whitby also has some great local attractions. Lynde House Museum, Station Gallery and Whitby Centennial Building are all part of the community’s history, while Whitby Harbour and the waterfront give you plenty of places to enjoy the outdoors. There are also lots of festivals, markets and community events throughout the year.

Another huge perk is the location. Whitby GO Station makes commuting into Toronto much easier, and Highway 401 runs right through the community. You’re also close to Oshawa, Ajax and Pickering, so you have plenty of options when it comes to shopping, restaurants, entertainment and other amenities.

Whitby has really grown over the years, but it hasn’t lost that feeling of community. You can have a newer home with all the modern features, but still be just a short drive from the lake, an established neighbourhood or the historic downtown.

It’s the kind of place where you can spend a Saturday morning grabbing a coffee downtown, take the kids to the park in the afternoon and finish the day with a walk by the lake, and that mix of convenience, community and outdoor space is a big part of what makes Whitby such a great place to call home.
