Ajax

 Ajax is a great option if you want more space and a little more of a suburban feel, but you still want to be close enough to Toronto. It's a community where you'll find established neighbourhoods, newer homes, lots of parks and trails, great schools and, of course, the lake.

One of the things people really love about Ajax is the variety of neighbourhoods. There are older homes closer to the waterfront, newer communities in North Ajax and everything in between. You'll find detached homes, townhomes, semis, condos and plenty of family-sized homes with yards. Whether you're buying your first home or looking for somewhere to raise a family, there are lots of options.

The waterfront is probably one of Ajax's biggest selling points. There are about 7 km of trails along Lake Ontario, and it's a favourite spot for walking, biking, running or just getting out for some fresh air. The Waterfront Trail runs through the community and connects to the larger trail system along the lake. Ajax Waterfront Park, Rotary Park and Paradise Park are all popular spots, especially when the weather is nice. Rotary Park has a splash pad, playgrounds and beach access, so it's a pretty popular place for families in the summer.

Another spot locals know well is Pickering Village. And yes, it's actually in Ajax! The historic area along Old Kingston Road has older homes, local restaurants, shops and a bit of a small-town feel. The Pickering Village Heritage Conservation District and Duffins Trail are nice places to explore, and it's one of those areas that feels a little different from the newer parts of town.

Ajax also has a lot of green space. Greenwood Conservation Area is a favourite for getting out for a walk, with trails running along Duffins Creek. There are also trails through neighbourhoods and along places like Carruthers Creek, so you don't always have to get in the car to find somewhere to go for a walk.

For families, there are plenty of schools, recreation centres and sports programs around town. Some of the local elementary schools include Westney Heights Public School, Lakeside Public School and Lincoln Alexander Public School. Ajax High School and J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate are two of the local high schools, along with Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School. School boundaries can change, so it's always a good idea to check the school catchment for a specific address before buying.

Getting around is another big plus. Highway 401 runs right through Ajax, and Ajax GO makes commuting into Toronto fairly convenient. Durham Region Transit also connects Ajax with the surrounding communities. If you're working in Toronto but don't want to live right in the city, Ajax can be a really good middle ground.

There's also plenty to do without having to leave town. The St. Francis Centre for Community, Arts & Culture hosts concerts, shows and other events, while the Ajax Community Centre, Audley Recreation Centre and McLean Community Centre offer plenty of options for sports and recreation.

And then there are the little things that make Ajax feel like home. Grab a coffee, head down to the lake, take the dog for a walk along the waterfront, spend an afternoon in Pickering Village or take the kids to Rotary Park. It's not flashy, and that's part of the appeal. It's just a really comfortable place to live.
