Port Perry

Port Perry is one of those communities that feels like a little escape from the busier parts of the GTA. You’re surrounded by countryside, you have Lake Scugog right in town, and there’s a beautiful historic downtown filled with local shops, restaurants and cafés. It has that small-town feel that a lot of people are looking for, while still being close enough to Oshawa, Whitby and the rest of Durham Region.

One thing I love about Port Perry is how much of the community revolves around the lake. You can head down to Palmer Park, walk along the waterfront, watch the boats at the marina or let the kids play at the waterfront playground and splash pad. Joe Fowler Park and Birdseye Park are also right along the water and are great places to get outside and enjoy the views of Lake Scugog.

The downtown is probably one of the first things people notice about Port Perry. Queen Street and Water Street are lined with beautiful historic buildings, independent shops, restaurants, cafés and local businesses. It’s the kind of downtown where you can park the car, walk around for an afternoon and actually take your time. The historic Victorian architecture is a big part of what gives Port Perry its character.

And there are some great local spots to discover. Old Flame Brewing Co. is right downtown in a historic building and has become a popular place for locals to meet up. The Piano Café is another longtime favourite for coffee and lunch, while Marwan's Global Bistro is a great option when you’re looking for a nicer dinner. If you’re down by the waterfront, Louies Cafe and Dessert is a fun stop for coffee, ice cream or something to eat.

For families, there are plenty of parks and recreation options. Scugog Community Recreation Centre has fitness facilities and recreation programs, while Scugog Arena is a popular spot for hockey and skating. There are also sports fields, tennis courts, playgrounds and trails throughout the community.

One of the things I really like about Port Perry is that you don’t have to drive far to feel like you’re out in the country. There are farms, orchards and rural roads all around the community. Ocala Winery & Orchards is just outside town, and Nature’s Bounty Farm is another local spot for seasonal farm activities and apple picking.

If you’re looking for something a little different, Scugog Shores Museum Village is just a short drive across to Scugog Island. It’s a great way to learn more about the area's history, with historic buildings and exhibits that give you a look at what life was like in rural Ontario.

There’s also a really strong arts and culture scene for a community this size. Town Hall 1873 hosts performances and events, Scugog Arts supports local artists, and Theatre on the Ridge puts on live performances throughout the year. META4 Contemporary Craft Gallery is another great downtown stop if you enjoy art and locally made pieces.

For families, Port Perry High School is right in the heart of downtown and has been part of the community for more than 150 years. There are also several elementary schools in and around Port Perry, including R. H. Cornish Public School, Prince Albert Public School, Good Shepherd Catholic School and Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

When it comes to homes, Port Perry has a nice mix. You’ll find older detached homes and bungalows, established family neighbourhoods, townhomes, newer subdivisions and larger rural properties just outside town. So whether you’re looking for a home close to downtown or want a little more land and privacy, there are quite a few different options.

And while Port Perry has that quiet, small-town feel, it’s still well connected. Highway 12 provides access to Oshawa and the rest of Durham, and Whitby GO Station is the closest GO connection for commuters heading toward Toronto.

There’s also always something going on in the community. The Port Perry Fair is a longtime local tradition, and downtown events, markets and seasonal celebrations bring people together throughout the year. It’s one of those places where supporting local businesses and getting involved in the community really seems to matter.

Port Perry really is a community where you can slow things down a little. You can grab a coffee downtown, walk by the lake, meet friends for dinner and be home surrounded by quiet streets and countryside.
