Newcastle

Newcastle is one of those communities that feels a little different from the busier parts of Durham Region. It has a small-town feel, beautiful Lake Ontario views, a great local community and plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors. It’s a place where people tend to know their neighbours, support local businesses and enjoy a slower pace of life.

One thing I love about Newcastle is the waterfront. You’re never too far from Lake Ontario, and Newcastle Harbour is a great place to walk around, watch the boats or grab a coffee and enjoy the view. Bond Head Park is another favourite, especially in the warmer months when you can sit by the water, have a picnic or let the kids play.

If you like getting outside, there are lots of options nearby. Samuel Wilmot Nature Area has walking trails through wetlands and wooded areas, and Darlington Provincial Park is just a short drive away. It’s an easy spot to spend a summer day with its beach, trails, picnic areas and camping.

Newcastle also has a really nice little downtown. Along King Avenue and Mill Street, you’ll find local shops, cafés, restaurants and small businesses. It’s the kind of place where you can park the car, walk around for a bit and actually get to know some of the people who own the businesses.

One of the things that makes Newcastle feel so welcoming is the community. There are local events throughout the year, including the Newcastle Santa Claus Parade and community festivals that bring everyone together. It’s common to see families out walking, kids playing at the parks and people catching up with neighbours.

For families, there are schools right in the community, including Newcastle Public School and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. Older students attend Clarke High School in nearby Orono. There are also plenty of recreation programs and sports activities for kids and adults.

When it comes to homes, Newcastle has a nice mix. You’ll find older detached homes and bungalows, newer subdivisions, townhomes and larger properties on bigger lots. Some of the older homes have lots of character, while the newer communities offer modern layouts and plenty of space for growing families.

Another thing I love about living in Newcastle is that you get that small-town feeling without being completely removed from everything. Bowmanville is just a short drive away, and Highway 401 makes it easy to get around Durham and head toward Toronto when you need to.

There are also some great local places to eat and grab a coffee. Sift Bakery is a popular spot for fresh baked goods and coffee, while The Snug  is a longtime local favourite for a meal. And if you’re looking for a little weekend adventure, Archibald’s Estate Winery and some of the other farms and wineries around Clarington are just a short drive away.

Newcastle really is a community where you can slow things down a little. You have the lake, parks, trails, local businesses, good schools and plenty of space, but you’re still close enough to Bowmanville, Oshawa and the rest of Durham Region.

It’s the kind of place where you can go for a walk by the lake, grab a coffee downtown and run into someone you know along the way, and that’s a pretty nice way to live.
