Rouge Hill

Rouge Hill is one of those east-end neighbourhoods that really gives you the best of both worlds. It has a quiet, residential feel with plenty of mature trees, parks and family homes, but you’re also right beside the Rouge Valley, Lake Ontario and some of the best natural spaces in the city. It’s a little farther from downtown, but that’s exactly what many people love about it.

Take a drive through Rouge Hill and you’ll see a mix of detached homes, bungalows, semi-detached houses, townhomes and newer builds. Many of the streets are lined with mature trees and good-sized yards, and there’s a nice mix of older homes that have been renovated alongside newer properties. It’s the kind of neighbourhood where you can find a little more space without giving up the convenience of being in Toronto.

For families, there are several schools in and around the neighbourhood, including William G. Davis Junior Public School, Joseph Howe Senior Public School, Rouge Valley Public School and Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute. There are also Catholic school options nearby. With so many parks, trails and recreation spaces, there’s plenty for families to enjoy close to home.

The outdoor space is definitely one of the biggest reasons people are drawn to Rouge Hill. Rouge National Urban Park is right nearby and offers an incredible amount of green space to explore, with forests, meadows, wetlands, trails and the Rouge River. Rouge Hill GO Station is also right in the neighbourhood, which is a huge bonus for anyone commuting downtown.

Rouge Hill GO Station provides a direct rail connection toward downtown Toronto and other parts of the GTA, while TTC bus routes connect the neighbourhood to the subway system. The 401 is also easily accessible, making it convenient for drivers heading across Scarborough or out of the city.

You’re also close to some of the east end’s best-known attractions. Toronto Zoo is just a short drive away, while Colonel Danforth Park and the Highland Creek ravine system are nearby for hiking, walking and exploring. Guild Park and Gardens and the Scarborough Bluffs are also within easy reach.

Rouge Hill has a bit of history and character too. The area developed around the Rouge River and the waterfront, and you can still see that connection to nature throughout the neighbourhood. The winding streets, ravines and larger green spaces give it a feel that’s very different from many of Toronto’s more built-up communities.

It’s the kind of neighbourhood where families spend weekends outside, neighbours recognize each other and there’s a little more room to breathe. You can head out for a hike, take the kids to the beach or hop on the GO train and be downtown without having to give up your quiet home base.
