Etobicoke, Ontario
Etobicoke is one of those parts of Toronto that gives you a little bit of everything. You’re still in the city, but in many neighbourhoods it doesn’t feel like you are. There are quiet, tree-lined streets, bigger lots, parks, ravines and family homes, but you’re also close to the lake, shopping, restaurants and the downtown core. It’s a popular choice for families, couples and anyone who wants a little more space without giving up city conveniences.
One of the things people love about Etobicoke is how different the neighbourhoods can feel. You have the waterfront communities of Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch, the beautiful streets of The Kingsway and Humber Valley Village, and more suburban areas like Markland Wood, Eringate and Princess-Rosethorn. There’s really something for everyone.
For families, there are lots of schools throughout Etobicoke, including Etobicoke School of the Arts, Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, Richview Collegiate Institute, Lambton-Kingsway Junior Middle School and Humber Valley Village Junior Middle School, along with many elementary schools and Catholic school options. School catchments can be very specific in some parts of Etobicoke, so it’s always worth checking the exact address when you’re looking at a home.
There’s also no shortage of green space. Centennial Park is one of the biggest parks in the area and has walking trails, sports fields, the Etobicoke Olympium, an arena and the Centennial Park Conservatory. Along the Humber River, you’ll find James Gardens, Humber Valley trails and Home Smith Park, while the waterfront communities have access to the Martin Goodman Trail, Humber Bay Park and Colonel Samuel Smith Park.
Etobicoke is also really convenient for everyday life. Sherway Gardens is one of the area's biggest shopping destinations, while The Kingsway, Bloor Street West, Islington Village and Lake Shore Boulevard have plenty of smaller shops, restaurants and cafés. There are also community centres, arenas, pools and recreation programs throughout the area.
Getting around is another big plus. Depending on where you live, you have access to the TTC subway, GO Transit, streetcars, buses and major highways including the Gardiner and 427. Mimico and Long Branch GO Stations are especially handy for commuters heading downtown.
Etobicoke also has some pretty recognizable landmarks. The Humber River, Humber Bay waterfront, James Gardens, Centennial Park and The Kingsway all give different parts of Etobicoke their own personality.
But what really makes Etobicoke stand out is that it still feels like a collection of neighbourhoods. You can walk down a quiet residential street, stop at a local café, take the dog to the park and still be downtown in relatively little time. It’s a great option for people who want the convenience of Toronto without feeling like they’re living in the middle of the city.
