Real Estate in Markham, Ontario
Markham, Ontario
Markham is one of those places that has grown a lot over the years, but still has plenty of neighbourhoods where you get that comfortable, community feel. It’s a great option for families, professionals and anyone looking for more space while still having easy access to Toronto. You’ll find everything from older homes on mature streets to newer subdivisions, townhomes and condos.
One of the things that makes Markham so interesting is how different each part of the city can feel. Unionville, Markham Village, Cornell, Berczy Village, Box Grove and Cachet are just a few of the popular communities, and each has its own personality. Some areas have a more established feel, while others are newer and have been built with families in mind.
For families, Markham has a lot of highly regarded schools, including Markham District High School, Unionville High School, Markville Secondary School, Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School and St. Brother André Catholic High School, along with many elementary schools across the city. There are also several private school options, including Unionville Montessori Private School and St. Justin Martyr Catholic School. School boundaries can be very specific, so it’s always a good idea to check the exact address when looking at a home.
There are also plenty of places to get outside. Toogood Pond Park in Unionville is one of the city's best-known spots, with a walking trail around the pond, bridges, gardens and plenty of wildlife. Milne Dam Conservation Park is another popular place to walk, hike and enjoy the outdoors along the Rouge River. Markham also has a huge number of smaller neighbourhood parks, sports fields and recreation spaces.
If you like history and local character, Main Street Unionville is definitely worth checking out. The historic street is lined with restaurants, cafés, shops and heritage buildings, and it’s one of the nicest places to spend an afternoon. Markham Village has its own historic Main Street as well, with local businesses and some of the city's older homes and buildings.
For shopping and everyday errands, Markham has plenty of options. Markville Shopping Centre is one of the area's biggest shopping destinations, while First Markham Place, Pacific Mall and Downtown Markham offer a huge variety of shops, restaurants and services. The area is also known for its incredible selection of Asian restaurants and grocery stores, so there are always plenty of new places to try.
Markham is also home to some great attractions. Varley Art Gallery in Unionville features Canadian art and exhibitions, while Markham Museum gives you a look at the city's history through historic buildings and exhibits. Pacific Mall is another local landmark and one of the area's most recognizable shopping destinations.
Getting around is another big advantage. GO Transit has several stations serving Markham, including Unionville GO and Centennial GO, while York Region Transit connects the different communities. The GO train and bus network makes commuting into Toronto possible without having to drive every day, and Highway 404, Highway 407 and Highway 7 are all easily accessible from many parts of Markham.
Markham also has plenty going on throughout the year, from festivals and farmers' markets to community events and activities at places like the Markham Civic Centre and Markham Pan Am Centre. There are lots of sports facilities, community centres and programs for families, which is one of the reasons the city is so popular with people raising kids.
What really makes Markham stand out is the combination of convenience and community. You can live in a quiet neighbourhood with parks and schools nearby, but still be close to restaurants, shopping, transit and everything else you need. And with Toronto just a short trip away, you don’t have to give up the city lifestyle completely.
