Riverdale, Toronto
Riverdale is one of those Toronto neighbourhoods that has a little bit of everything. It’s close to downtown, surrounded by parks and ravines, and full of beautiful older homes, great restaurants, cafés and local shops. You can be in the middle of the city one minute and out walking through a park the next, which is a big part of what makes Riverdale so special.
Take a walk through Riverdale and you’ll quickly see why people love the homes here. There are beautiful old brick houses, Victorian and Edwardian homes, classic Toronto semis and row houses, along with plenty of renovated properties and newer condos. Some homes still have their original character, while others have been completely transformed for modern family living. It’s a neighbourhood where no two streets feel exactly the same, and that’s part of its charm.
For families, there are several schools in and around Riverdale, including Withrow Avenue Junior Public School, Frankland Community School, Riverdale Collegiate Institute and Morse Street Junior Public School. Duke of Connaught Public School is also nearby, along with several Catholic school options. With parks and playgrounds everywhere, it’s easy to see why Riverdale is such a popular choice for families.
Of course, one of the biggest draws is Riverdale Park. The east and west sides of the park offer plenty of green space, sports fields, walking trails and playgrounds, but the real highlight is the view from Riverdale Park East. Watching the sun set over the Toronto skyline from the hill has become one of those classic Toronto experiences.
You’re also close to Withrow Park, which is a real community hub. It has sports fields, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a dog park and plenty of open space. The park hosts local events throughout the year and is always busy with families, neighbours and people enjoying the outdoors.
Riverdale is also a great neighbourhood for food and shopping. Gerrard Street East, Broadview Avenue and Queen Street East are all packed with independent restaurants, cafés, bakeries and local businesses. Whether you’re looking for a great brunch spot, a neighbourhood coffee shop or somewhere to grab dinner, you’re never far from something good. Another favourite is Broadview Avenue, especially around the Danforth, where you’ll find restaurants, shops and some of the best skyline views in the city.
Broadview Station also makes getting downtown incredibly easy. For commuters, the location is hard to beat. There are several TTC subway and streetcar options nearby, including Broadview, Castle Frank and Chester Stations, along with bus and streetcar routes throughout the neighbourhood. The Don Valley Parkway is also close by if you’re heading out of the city or travelling across the GTA.
Riverdale has plenty of history too. The neighbourhood is home to Riverdale Farm, a favourite for families and visitors, where you can see farm animals and explore the grounds right in the middle of Toronto. Necropolis Cemetery and St. James Town are also part of the area's rich history, while the older homes and streets give Riverdale much of its character.
And then there’s the community itself. Riverdale has a very walkable, friendly feeling, with neighbours out walking their dogs, families heading to the park and people grabbing coffee at their favourite local spot. There’s always something happening, but it never feels like you have to be in the middle of it.
You’re close to downtown, great restaurants, beautiful parks, transit and some of the best views in Toronto, while still having a real residential community around you. For families, professionals, first-time buyers and anyone who wants to be close to the action without living right downtown, Riverdale is a pretty special place to call home.
