The Danforth & Danforth Village

The Danforth and Danforth Village are two of those east-end neighbourhoods that really have a little bit of everything. There’s a great mix of busy city streets, quiet residential pockets, beautiful older homes, local shops, parks, schools and some of the best restaurants in Toronto. It’s the kind of area where you can walk out your front door and have pretty much everything you need close by.

Danforth Avenue is obviously the heart of the neighbourhood. It stretches across the east end and is lined with independent shops, cafés, bakeries, restaurants, grocery stores and local businesses. The area around Pape and Danforth is especially lively, and Greektown is one of the best-known parts of the neighbourhood. You’ll find plenty of traditional Greek restaurants, bakeries and shops, but there’s also an incredible variety of other cuisines throughout the area.

One of the things that makes The Danforth so convenient is that you don't necessarily need to get in your car to enjoy the neighbourhood. You can grab a coffee, meet a friend for dinner, pick up groceries, do some shopping and head to the park all within a short walk. There’s always something going on along the avenue, especially during the warmer months when patios are busy and the streets come alive.

Just north and south of Danforth Avenue, things become much quieter. The residential streets are lined with mature trees and a mix of classic Toronto homes, including semi-detached and detached houses, bungalows, townhomes and renovated character homes. There are also plenty of condos and newer developments, particularly along the main streets and around the subway stations.

For families, there are a number of schools throughout the neighbourhood, including Withrow Avenue Junior Public School, Frankland Community School, Earl Haig Public School, Pape Avenue Junior Public School and Riverdale Collegiate Institute. There are also several Catholic schools and other options in the surrounding communities.

One of the biggest perks of living here is the access to parks. Withrow Park is right in the middle of the neighbourhood and is a real community gathering spot. It has sports fields, tennis courts, a skating rink, a playground and plenty of green space. In the winter, the rink is popular with local families, while in the summer you'll often see people out walking their dogs, playing sports or just enjoying the park.

Just south of the Danforth is Riverdale Park East, which is one of those Toronto spots that never really gets old. The hill at the top of the park has one of the best views of the downtown skyline, and it’s a popular place to watch the sunset, go for a run, have a picnic or take the kids to the playground. Riverdale Park West is also nearby, along with Riverdale Farm, which is a favourite with families.

If you like getting outside, you're also close to Taylor Creek Park and the Don Valley trail system. There are walking and cycling trails that stretch well beyond the neighbourhood, so it's easy to escape the busy streets and spend some time surrounded by nature.

The area also has a great community calendar. The annual Taste of the Danforth has been a major east-end tradition for years, bringing restaurants, live entertainment and thousands of people to Danforth Avenue. There are also local farmers markets, street events and community festivals throughout the year.

Transit is another huge advantage. Broadview, Chester, Pape, Donlands and Greenwood TTC stations run along Line 2, making it very easy to get downtown. The subway is one of the reasons the neighbourhood is so popular with commuters, and there are also plenty of buses and streetcars connecting to surrounding areas. Drivers have easy access to the Don Valley Parkway, which is another bonus for anyone commuting around the GTA. And with the Danforth GO Station nearby, there are additional options for getting around the city and beyond.

The neighbourhood also has a lot of history. The Danforth has been an important east-end route for more than a century, and the area's Greek community has played a huge role in shaping the neighbourhood we know today. Even as new businesses and residents move in, that sense of history is still very much part of the community.



What I think really makes The Danforth and Danforth Village stand out is the balance. You can live on a quiet, tree-lined residential street and still be a five-minute walk from a busy restaurant or coffee shop. You have excellent transit, great schools and plenty of parks, but you're also close to downtown. It feels like a real neighbourhood, rather than just another part of the city.
