The Canary District

The Canary District is one of those newer Toronto neighbourhoods that already feels like it has its own little community. Just east of downtown, you have modern buildings, cafés and restaurants, but also some incredible parks and trails right outside your door. It’s close to the action without feeling quite as busy as living right in the downtown core.

One of the things I like about the Canary District is how thoughtfully the area was designed. Originally developed as the Athletes’ Village for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, the neighbourhood was built with walkability and green space in mind. Today, you’ll find modern condos and townhomes, pedestrian-friendly streets and a nice mix of professionals, first-time buyers, downsizers and families.

For families, there are schools nearby, including Nelson Mandela Park Public School and St. Paul Catholic School, along with playgrounds, parks and community facilities throughout the surrounding area.

The outdoor space is definitely one of the biggest perks of living here. Corktown Common is right beside the neighbourhood, with walking and cycling paths, a playground, splash pad, open lawns and plenty of green space. You’re also close to the Don River trails and Martin Goodman Trail, making it easy to walk, run or cycle toward the waterfront and other parts of the city.

There are lots of great neighbourhoods and amenities close by too. The Distillery Historic District is just a short walk away, with restaurants, cafés, shops, galleries and events throughout the year. St. Lawrence Market, King Street East, Riverside and Leslieville are all nearby as well, giving you plenty of options for shopping, dining and exploring.

Getting around is easy, with the King streetcar providing a direct connection into downtown and other TTC routes nearby. The Ontario Line is also being built in the area, which will eventually give residents another convenient way to travel across the city.

But what really makes the Canary District stand out is the amount of green space you get while still being so close to downtown. You can walk the dog through Corktown Common, bike along the Don River, grab dinner in the Distillery District and be downtown in minutes.



It’s a modern neighbourhood that still gives you parks, trails and room to get outside, which is a pretty great combination if you like condo living but don’t want to feel surrounded by the city all the time.
