Clarington

Clarington is one of those places where you really can have the best of both worlds. You have growing communities with newer homes, shopping and all the everyday conveniences you need, but you’re also surrounded by farmland, forests, conservation areas and Lake Ontario. It’s a big part of why so many families and people looking for more space are choosing to call Clarington home.

One thing I love about Clarington is how different each community feels. Bowmanville has a great historic downtown and lots of established and newer neighbourhoods, while Courtice is popular with families looking for newer homes and easy access to Highway 401. Newcastle has that small-town, lakeside feel, and Orono is even more rural, with a charming little village surrounded by countryside. Clarington is also home to a number of smaller rural communities and hamlets, so there really is something for everyone.

If you love being outside, this is a pretty great place to live. Clarington has more than 70 parks, along with trails, conservation areas, beaches and plenty of green space.  Darlington Provincial Park is one of the area's biggest attractions, with a sandy beach, hiking trails, picnic areas and camping right along Lake Ontario. There are also some amazing places to explore further north. Ganaraska Forest is a favourite for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and getting out into nature, while Orono Crown Lands has a huge network of trails through forests and open fields. Enniskillen Conservation Area is another beautiful spot to explore, with trails through forests, wetlands and the Oak Ridges Moraine.

And then there are the attractions that make Clarington a little different from your typical suburban community. Canadian Tire Motorsport Park brings racing fans from all over, while Brimacombe is a popular spot for skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Families also love Jungle Cat World Wildlife Park and Cedar Park Resort when they're looking for something fun to do close to home.

Clarington also has a really strong agricultural side. There are local farms, markets, orchards and seasonal events throughout the area. Archibald's Estate Winery & Orchard is a popular destination for picking apples, enjoying the orchard and trying some of their local products. Pingle's Farm Market is another family favourite, especially in the fall.

For families, there are schools throughout Clarington, including Bowmanville High School, Clarington Central Secondary School, Courtice Secondary School, St. Stephen's Secondary School and Clarke High School, along with plenty of public and Catholic elementary schools. There are also several recreation facilities, arenas, pools and community centres throughout the municipality.

Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Bowmanville, Courtice Community Complex and Diane Hamre Recreation Complex in Newcastle are all popular places for local families. There are also arenas in Newcastle and Orono, along with sports fields and recreation programs throughout the community.

One of the things I really like about Clarington is that you don't have to go far to find something local. You can grab a coffee in downtown Bowmanville, head to the waterfront in Newcastle, spend the afternoon hiking in the countryside or take the kids to one of the many parks. There are also lots of local restaurants, breweries, cafés and small businesses to discover. Historic Downtown Bowmanville is a great example of this. There are independent shops, restaurants and cafés along King Street, and events like Applefest bring the community together every fall.

The homes throughout Clarington are just as varied as the communities themselves. You'll find older detached homes and bungalows, semi-detached homes, townhomes, newer subdivisions and larger rural properties. If you're looking for a newer family home with a garage and a little more space, there are lots of options. If you'd rather have an older home with character or a larger country property, you can find those too.

And for commuters, the location is another big plus. Highway 401 runs through the southern part of Clarington, while Highway 407 provides another option for getting around the GTA. You're also close to Oshawa and Whitby, and Durham Region Transit connects Clarington's communities with the rest of Durham.

Clarington is definitely growing, but I think that's part of what makes it interesting. You still have the small-town communities, farms, local businesses and beautiful outdoor spaces, while new neighbourhoods, recreation facilities and amenities continue to be added. There are even a number of park improvements underway in 2026, including new playgrounds, splash pads and trails.

If you're looking for more space, a strong sense of community and plenty of places to get outside, Clarington is definitely worth a look. You can have a newer family home, a little more room to breathe and still be close enough to everything you need, and that's a pretty great combination.
