North York

North York is a big area, so there’s a little bit of everything here. You’ll find established family neighbourhoods, newer condo developments, quiet streets, parks, ravines, shopping and some of the best transit connections outside downtown. It’s a popular choice for families who want more space, but still want to be able to get around the city fairly easily.

The housing is just as varied. Depending on where you are, you’ll find detached homes, bungalows, semis, townhomes, condos and newer custom homes. Some areas have streets lined with mature trees and older homes, while others have a much more modern feel with high-rise and mid-rise developments.

For families, there are a huge number of schools throughout North York, including Earl Haig Secondary School, Claude Watson Arts Program, Northview Heights Secondary School, York Mills Collegiate Institute, William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute and Georges Vanier Secondary School. There are also many public, Catholic, French-language and private school options.

One of the biggest perks of North York is the amount of green space. Edwards Gardens, Sunnybrook Park, Earl Bales Park and the Don Valley are all popular spots for walking, cycling, sports and spending time outside. The ravine system gives many neighbourhoods a surprisingly green feel.

There are also plenty of places to shop and eat. Yorkdale Shopping Centre is one of the city's biggest shopping destinations, while Bayview Village Shopping Centre offers a different, more neighbourhood-focused shopping experience. Yonge Street, Sheppard Avenue and North York Centre also have restaurants, cafés, grocery stores and everyday services.

For entertainment, Mel Lastman Square is a great community hub, with events, festivals and outdoor activities throughout the year. Toronto Centre for the Arts is also nearby.

Transit is a huge advantage. Line 1 runs through the heart of North York, with stations including York Mills, Lawrence, North York Centre, Sheppard-Yonge and Finch. There are also multiple bus routes and easy access to the 401.

North York is also home to Aga Khan Museum, Black Creek Pioneer Village and Downsview Park, giving residents plenty of options when they want something to do without heading downtown.
