Summerhill South

Summerhill South is one of those Toronto neighbourhoods that feels surprisingly peaceful for somewhere so central. You’re close to Yonge Street, Yorkville, Rosedale and downtown, but once you turn onto the residential streets, you’ll find beautiful older homes, mature trees, front gardens and a much quieter neighbourhood feel.

One of the things I love about Summerhill South is the character of the homes. You’ll find Victorian and Edwardian houses, detached and semi-detached homes, townhouses and beautifully renovated older properties. There are also condos and apartments closer to the main streets, giving you a good mix of housing depending on what you’re looking for. Many of the older homes have kept their original details, and the mature trees and gardens make simply walking around the neighbourhood enjoyable.

For families, there are several schools in and around the area, including Cottingham Junior Public School and Rosedale Junior Public School, with Rosedale Heights School of the Arts nearby. There are also Catholic and private school options throughout the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Yonge Street is a big part of everyday life here and has a great local feel. You’ll find independent cafés, restaurants, bakeries, specialty food shops and everyday services, along with the historic Summerhill LCBO in the beautifully restored former North Toronto railway station. It’s one of those neighbourhood landmarks that really adds to the character of the area.

You’re also just a short distance from Yorkville when you want even more restaurants, shopping and galleries, while nearby Rosedale gives you another collection of local shops and quieter residential streets to explore.

The green space is another big perk. David A. Balfour Park is nearby and connects into the Vale of Avoca Ravine, with beautiful trails that are popular with walkers, runners and dog owners. You’re also close to the Rosedale Ravine and Toronto’s larger ravine and trail system, so it’s surprisingly easy to get away from the city without actually leaving it.

Getting around couldn’t be much easier. Summerhill and Rosedale Stations are both nearby on Line 1, making it simple to get downtown or travel north through the city. The neighbourhood is also very walkable, so restaurants, coffee shops, groceries and everyday errands can often be handled without getting in the car.

But what really makes Summerhill South stand out is the combination of location and neighbourhood feel. You can grab coffee on Yonge, walk through the ravine, head into Yorkville for dinner and still come home to a quiet street lined with beautiful older homes.
